The Most Common Skin Care Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

skin care mistakes

Let’s be honest for a second.  Skin care is confusing.  Take a look down the beauty and skin care aisle at any drugstore, and you’re bound to feel overwhelmed.  The same holds true for the rows upon rows of glittering counters in department stores with their beautiful, expensive bottles.  They all sound amazing.  They all tout their incredible benefits to make your skin smooth, blemish free, taut, and ageless.  Of course, when it comes down to it, these miracles in a bottle are often not all they are hyped up to be.  Sure, some are great, and offer wonderful benefits.  (We even have a few that we’re particularly fond of).  But skin care doesn’t stop with product application.  Realize it or not, there is a lot that you do throughout your day that impacts the look and feel of your skin.  Some of these mistakes, you may already be aware of, while others may be new revelations.  In any event, here are some of the more common skin care mistakes that you yourself may just be guilty of.

Skin Mistake #1 – Not Washing off Makeup

You leave it on all day.  Why does it have to come off at night?  The short answer is to give your skin an opportunity to recover.  When you don’t clean your face at night, makeup, dirt, and oil can clog pores.  This can lead to breakouts and a dull looking complexion.  If leaving makeup on overnight is a regular habit, premature aging of the skin will also begin to occur.

Skin Mistake #2 - Not Wearing Sunscreen Every Day

Sunscreen is always at the top of our list of skin beauty and health secrets.  Sure, you may slather it on when you head to the beach or for a day of outdoor activity, but UV damage occurs year-round with even small amounts of sun exposure.  Daily sunscreen application is critical to protecting your skin from sunburn, premature aging, and of course, skin cancer.

Skin Mistake #3 – Popping Pimples

We know it’s tempting.  You don’t like the way they look or feel and just want those pimples to be gone once and for all.  Unfortunately, attempting to pop them only serves to make matters worse.  Not only will you leave the existing pimple inflamed and red, squeezing pimples from the side actually forces the infection deeper into the skin, ultimately worsening your breakout problem.

Skin Mistake #4 – Not Keeping Skin Hydrated

Skin is the body’s largest organ and it craves moisture.  Hydrated skin is healthier, fuller, smoother, and younger in overall appearance.  This is just one of the many reasons that regular and ample water intake is so important for the body.  So too, is moisturizing.  Even oily skin requires the right formulation of moisturizer applied regularly.  In fact, it may benefit even more, as skin will compensate for lack of proper moisture by producing even more oil.

Skin Mistake #5 – Not Using the Right Skin Care Products

As we mentioned at the very beginning, and as we’re certain our readers know all too well, skin care product selection is overwhelming.  Are you using the right ones?  Are you using enough?  Maybe you’re even using too much.  The right combination and amount of cleansers, toners, moisturizers, and others are critical to keeping skin healthy.  This is one area where we definitely recommend the guidance of a professional.  Even if your budget is minimal there are good options available.  A board-certified dermatologist can help you learn exactly what to look for.

While it may not be on our official list, avoiding the dermatologist is another major skin mistake, no matter what your age.  From clearing up acne to reducing lines and wrinkles to treating skin cancer, a good dermatologist is your greatest asset in the fight for beautiful, healthy skin.  Contact the Baton Rouge or Lafayette office of the Dermasurgery Center to learn how we can help you in your own journey to gorgeous skin.
