Tips to Soothe Your Skin This Winter
Winter days are ahead, and while we in Louisiana may not experience the same harsh winters as our neighbors to the north, the colder weather can still take a toll on skin. As the temperatures dip, the wind picks up, and heaters come on, the typical oils that protect skin from the onslaught of the elements dry up. Suddenly, dry, itchy and cracked skin becomes the norm, and painful conditions such as psoriasis and eczema seem to be at their worst ever.
Naturally, we can’t avoid the elements that wreak havoc on the skin all winter long. Instead, as the saying goes, our best defense is a good offense. Taking proactive steps to keep skin healthy and moisturized during the coldest months of the year and can help you avoid the painful dryness and cracking that tends to come with them. Here are a few tips to keep your skin luscious and glowing all winter long!
Moisturize –Dry skin is thirsty skin and moisturizing is the most effective way to get it hydrated quickly. You may find that you need a heavier moisturizer during the winter than the one you use during the spring and summer months. Whatever your choice, select a moisturizer that is formulated for your skin type and apply fresh from the shower, when your skin is still slightly damp.
Minimize Hot Showers – When the temperatures begin to plummet, it’s tempting to banish the chill with an extra-long hot shower or bath. However, all that hot water is making dry skin worse as it removes natural oils that are trapping in moisture. Keep your showers or baths brief, and try to keep the water temperature lukewarm.
Keep the Hand Cream Nearby – The hands tend to feel the effects of dryness moreso than other areas of the body. The skin is thin and moisture is not easily retained. Add to this the fact that your hands are seldom protected from the elements in the way that other parts of your body are, and you’ll understand why they require some additional help. Keep a bottle of hand cream on your desk, in your car, or in your purse and wear gloves outside whenever possible.
Vaseline is Your New Best Friend – The uses for Vaseline are seemingly endless, and its ability to protect the skin is incredible. Wherever it’s used, you can rest assured that moisture stays locked in with this extra barrier of protection. Of course, it wouldn’t be feasible or practical to use Vaseline everywhere, but for some common areas that are particularly prone to dryness, it can make all the difference. Try it on lips, knees, elbows, and feet.
Use a Humidifer – Combat the hot dry air circulating in your home with a humidifier this winter. It will help replenish the lost moisture in the air and keep dry, flaking, cracked skin at bay. As an added bonus, higher levels of humidity have been shown to hinder the ability of viruses to cause flu infections.
