MOHS SURGERY

Mohs Surgery Louisiana

+ WHY MOHS

Mohs surgery is not always required to treat skin cancer. In many cases, treatments such as scraping, burning, freezing, radiation and standard excision may work just fine. But some situations warrant a procedure that will remove all the cancer, minimize the risk of recurrence, and leave as little scarring as possible.

For certain cancers, standard treatment methods may not be successful because they rely on the human eye to determine how much of the skin is affected. With Mohs surgery, the doctor examines tissue under a microscope to gauge the extent of the cancer. Standard methods may result in removal of too much – or too little – skin. This may increase the chance of recurrence or cause unnecessary scarring.

Standard therapies are even less likely to be successful when previously treated skin cancers come back.

The types of skin cancers that are most likely to require Mohs surgery are as follows:

  • Cancers that are located in highly visible or cosmetically sensitive areas such as the face, scalp, neck, ears, legs, fingers, or toes
  • Cancers that are large, aggressive, or rapidly growing
  • Cancers that have been previously treated, but that have come back (recurred)
  • Cancers that have poorly-defined borders
  • Cancers in which the highest cure rate is desired
  • Cancers in which the scar following removal should be minimized

+ PREPARATION & RECOVERY

Mohs surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. This means you will not have to go to the hospital or be put under general anesthesia. The surgery will take approximately 2 to 5 hours, depending on the size and complexity of your skin cancer. You should experience minimal discomfort and be able to go home immediately after the surgery is finished.

As with any surgery, it’s important to prepare properly. You will need to avoid things like alcohol, aspirin and certain vitamins in the days before your surgery.

You will need to limit strenuous activities and wear a bandage after surgery. Limiting activities for 3 to 4 weeks after surgery will allow you to resume full activity sooner with optimal healing.

There will be a scar at the site where the cancer is removed. The scar will begin to heal in 2 to 3 weeks but complete healing and improvement in the appearance of the scar will continue over 3 to 12 months. While the size of the scar will depend on the extent of the cancer, Dr. Prather will make every effort to make it as small and inconspicuous as possible.

Please follow Preoperative Instructions, and any other instructions Dr. Prather may give you, closely. Otherwise your surgery may have to be rescheduled or your wound may not heal properly..
